The Zigzag River, a Metro bus and a Northern Pacific caboose.

Scott Mayeda

July 3

We stayed at a HipCamp near the base of Mt Hood. HipCamp is like AirBnb, but for campsites. Zigzag Farm is a trippy, hippie, organic farm named for the . . . Zigzag River, not the Zig Zag dude! There was a converted city bus was a shared kitchen and lounge. There were yurts, cabins, and a bunch of secluded campsites near the creek in a primeval looking forest. We took a daytrip to Leavenworth, a pseudo German tourist town that was surprisingly fun for people younger than 100. From there we stopped at Cle Elum where we stayed overnight in a caboose. It was part of the Iron Horse B and B, which was a nicely done railroad museum. Dawn’s father Art loved everything railroad and she said he would be in heaven here. Then she said, “But he is already in heaven!”.

Winthrop was another nice surprise. It is a western town with a boardwalk and a cowboy/Patagonia vibe. The area is also a hiking, mountain biking and rafting hotspot.

Mazama, 15 miles from Winthrop, is a smaller, even more hipper and more stylish outdoor townette. There are many new, modern, Sunset magazine worthy homes owned by Seattleites. Many are tech owned vacation homes. There are 3 businesses: a high-end organic market, a new craft brewpub and an outdoor outfitter. More Subarus and dogs everywhere. Feels like a PNW Encinitas.
