From Tofino we drove to the northeastern side of the island. In Campbell River I hoped to fish but only the pinks were running and they are smaller and not too tasty. Instead we hiked to Elk Falls and took a day trip to Quadra Island, where an eagle was checking us out at the ferry landing. Then on to scenic Telegraph Cove, where Japanese businessmen helped start a salmon saltery and sawmill. It’s a quaint, happy place. Next was another ferry hop to Sointula, a Finnish community. People go to remote Bere Point in hopes of seeing orcas rub their bellies on the gravel beach. We hiked and watched, but they didn’t come. On advice from camp neighbors, we went exploring to find the Huson limestone caves. It was amazing to see them in the middle of the rainforest. The spring water was so clean and nice to swim in. All in all a good week.

Just amazing territory. Thanks for sharing it with the rest of us. How could we ever know all that went before us and our enclosed little personal cocoons. It would be great if we were required to experience all this history first hand. You can start an educational foundation based on your travel!
