Gracious people

Scott Mayeda

In Japan it is considered rude to talk loudly in public places. On the street amongst hundreds or even thousands of people, there's no yelling or arguing. And NO littering and virtually NO graffiti. You can buy a beer from a vending machine any hour of the day. A machine like that wouldn't be there in the morning in the U.S. We had nice moments with the obasan at the nori store, Koji the professional taxi driver, the cheerful and chatty rickshaw drivers in Kyoto. It is common to see people wearing kimonos in everyday life. Sometimes on dates, shopping or for any occasion. At least that’s how it appeared to me.
