Eat, sleep, eat

Scott Mayeda

It’s safe to say we ate our way through Tokyo and Kyoto. It started with fluffy ricotta pancakes at “A Happy Pancake” in Shibuya. I would have them every Sunday if I could. Then on to the super popular Tsukiji Outdoor Market for street food versions of sashimi, dried puffer, sea squirt and other fun things. I never knew strawberries came in other colors. The white ones tasted like they had sugar injected but my daughter assures me that everything in Japan is organic.

One night Zack took us to a sushi restaurant where we each had a 25 piece omakase meal. This is where the chef chooses the menu. Dawn and I were…..a bit apprehensive. There were many wonderful pieces but I tend to remember the challenging ones. Namely, hairy crab, ark shell, sardine and the CLAM, which was like an extremely chewy rubber vagina.

We had a 2 hour All-You-Can-Eat-and Drink Korean BBQ dinner. There’s a grill on your table and heaping plates of meat, veggies, mushrooms arrive for self-cooking. I volunteered to be the drink runner and went back and forth for beer and sake. Did I mention the meal also included a bottle of whisky? The 6 of us ate all we could and tried to do the same with the drinks. Afterwards, Dawn and I taxied back to the hotel. I have no idea where the others ended up. The next morning, there wasn’t much talking.

In Kyoto we had IMO, the best meal of my life. A chef grills for you: wagyu beef exactly how you like it, along with many different vegetable combinations.

One day it got a bit warm so we got to choose from the many creamy desserts. The Japanese are masters of subtle flavors and happy mouth feel. This is the last blog from our travels in Japan. Thanks for reading. Feel free to comment.
